With Fashion Week underway, I've been driven to scroll through past street style looks captured on Vogue. This really got me thinking about the art of personal style and what leads people to dress the way that they do.
I don't have a specific memory of my first act of intentionally putting a look together, but I grew up seeing my parents, extended family members and family friends dressing to impress for all occasions (even if it was just to visit someone at their home). The looks would always be at a solid 10 and I loved the appreciation that came with it. Personally it all seems to come naturally, and I believe it's simply because that's what I chose to observe more intently as a child
With that in mind, I have come up with 5 major ways to really master the art of personal styling. Putting looks together for oneself doesn't come easily to a lot of people, so I hope this acts as a bit of a guiding light to personal style.
Know your body
Self knowledge is the foundation to making decisions that benefit you. You have to know your body and what works for it. Being in the know of your body type makes it so much easier to gravitate towards items that make you feel more confident and bold in your style, which is what personal style is all about - unique to you!
Personal Preference
What do you like? AND What do you not like?
Sometimes we are more certain of what we don't like, and knowledge of this helps eliminate and bring items we do like to the forefront of options to choose from. Focusing on this makes you immune to simply following trends or being a follower of the crowd. You're able to find your own unique looks and stick to them.
Get into the basics
Building on a solid foundation is the best way to put a look together.
A basic tee, tank, pant or simple button-up shirt allows you to easily layer your more unique and extraordinary pieces. Creating a look is easiest and most efficient when the foundation of the look is strong.
Don't overlook the simple items that come together to build a substantial style for you.
Fit is everything
Make sure your pieces fit you well.
Investing in a tailor will be one of the best clothing decisions you make today especially if the average fit sizes found in stores are not compatible to your body type. You can tell when an outfit doesn't sit right on you and it can make you uncomfortable which can easily kill your confidence in your look. So I highly recommend investing in a tailor or finding pieces that fit you perfectly well.
Self confidence
Consistent practice is the guide to mastering anything which, in turn, boosts confidence in doing that particular thing. I am a firm believer that this goes for styling as well. Trust yourself and stay confident in your choices. You know what works for your body type, what you like to see on yourself and you KNOW you look good and that holds the most value.
